An Assembly Member said he believed Caernarfon magistrates should have been tougher on a Bangor man who incited people to riot on Facebook. Clwyd West AM Darren Millar said: "The public will want to see individuals made examples of" in the case of David Glyn Jones, who was convicted by Caernarfon magistrates after admitting a charge under the Communications Act. Mr Millar added: "I’m disappointed that he only got four months. I do think the public context overrides other concerns.”
Welsh police are still aiding colleagues in London a full month after riots happened there. South Wales Police have two units, 27 officers each, working in the English capital this week. "We worked the day shift as normal here in Bridgend, then had a phone-call at midnight saying ‘you need to get into work, you’re running a team in London," said Inspector Stephen Rees, from South Wales Police. Welsh officers described it as a ‘war-zone’, with shops looted.
A Swansea fraudster has absconded from prison and police want to find him "swiftly". Once an award-winning businessman who ran a successful double glazing firm in Port Talbot, Martin Evans turned to fraud when the firm collapsed. He was jailed in 2006 for drugs supply and fraud. Swansea Crown Court had heard that Evans swindled 87 investors of nearly £900,000 by promising a 70 per cent return from an ostrich farm set up at Swansea.
Both South Wales and North Wales police forces have sent officers to London to help tackle violence after consecutive nights of unrest. South Wales Police have sent 54 officers from two public service units while North Wales Police would not give specific numbers for its deployment. North Wales Police Dep Ch Con Ian Shannon said: "North Wales is a safe place to live, work and visit and we have sufficient resilience in the force to ensure it remains this way."
South Wales crews had to neutralise a potential hazard when a gas cylinder was discovered amongst a fire. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said the fire crew was called to the scene, south of Pontypridd Golf Club, between Rhydfelin and Abertridwr in Caerphilly county, and began hosing down the cylinder in order to stop it blowing up. A spokeswoman said: "We left it to cool overnight and are going back this morning to assess it."
A gang who went across North Wales stealing cigarettes and alcohol from small shops have been sent to prison. Among the outlets they targeted between the end of September and just before Christmas last year were The Spar and Co-op at Prestatyn, the Hearts Store at Pensarn, the Co-op at Old Colwyn, the Spar at Dyserth, the Spar at Rhuddlan, One Stop at Connah’s Quay, the Spar at Betws-y-Coed, and the Somerfield and Spar at Llanrwst.
Councils in Wales have been hit by a huge rise in metal thefts which are costing already under-strain council coffers thousands of pounds. For example between 2007/08 and 2010/11 Caerphilly has seen the cost of metal thefts jump from £1,025 to £129,766. Other items were also stolen but their value is unknown. Caerphilly council had to spend £70,000 to replace stolen metal bins and £50,000 for manhole covers. Thieves have been attracted by rising prices for scrap metal.
Those against plans to scrap police authorities and replace them with elected police and crime commissioners cited the evidence of high crime levels in Gwent. Wrexham councillor Malcolm King said: “Because it is such a huge change no one knows how it is going to affect crime levels and there is no evidence being presented from the Government as to what might happen as a result.” The Gwent region is among the worst in the UK for criminal damage.
Claims are that prisons in Wales are becoming ‘colleges of crime’ due to the increase in young offenders in certain areas. Merthyr Tydfil youths are more likely to be imprisoned than those living in Manchester and inner-city areas of London such as Hackney, Southwark and Lambeth. The Prison Reform Trust commented about the town: “One look at the unacceptably high reconviction rates for this age group reveals that, too often, prison acts as a college of crime.”
