  1. Robust Access Control is a Must for Specialist Medical Centres

Specialist medical centres require very robust access control systems, due both to the often very expensive machinery contained within, as well as the fact that they normally hold very sensitive data on their patients.

This is exactly the case with cancer treatment specialist Rutherford Health, who has entered into a £55m development framework agreement under which it will establish up to five new facilities in the UK to provide diagnostic services to the NHS and to private patients.

The agreement is with Equitix, an investor, developer and long-term fund manager of core infrastructure assets in the UK and Europe.

Each centre will provide a variety of diagnostics services to NHS and private patients including positron emission tomography-computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, ultrasound, endoscopy, x-ray and other relevant diagnostic services.

Rutherford chief executive Mike Moran said: “The demand for diagnostic capability in the NHS, and private sector, has increased significantly over the last five years with demand outstripping supply year on year. The DFA with Equitix will enable Rutherford Diagnostics to meet the rising demand for diagnostic clinical services”.

A solid and reliable access control system is a must for all the companies in the logistics sector keen to expand their business and premises.

One of the latest examples comes from Cwmbran, where Bridgetime Transport part of The APC network, has opened a new operational parcel depot on the Avondale Industrial Estate.

The move allows the company to serve SME customers in a time where SMEs are of great importance.

The depot has an employed workforce of 17 and will be looking to recruit for more roles in the local area in the coming months in order to meet increased demand from the region’s burgeoning SME community.

The new location provides 5,000 sq. ft. of premium warehouse space, more than double its original space of 2,000 sq.ft. This increased space will allow the company to expand its overnight parcel collection and delivery service offerings to local businesses; particularly its specialist fragile, security and liquid services, enabling local SMES to service a national customer base.

Robbie Evans, Director of Bridgetime Transport, said:

“Our new depot is perfectly placed to grow and serve the blossoming heart of Gwent’s entrepreneurial community. We view our customers as more than just a tracking number – they are real people working hard to serve their community, working in partnership with their delivery teams and drivers.

“Managed by Simon Hammett, with new facilities at our disposal and a growing team of enthusiastic logistics experts raring to go, we are excited to champion Welsh SMEs and help them flourish in the coming years.”

  3. Contactless Access Control – The Solution of Choice for Enhanced Safety in the Educational Sector

Contactless access control solutions are likely to represent the solutions of choice for the educational sector in the near future, as the combination of contactless credentials and touchless access control hardware can help mitigate the risks posed by the COVID-19 outbreak.

It’s already a well-known fact that most universities and colleges closed earlier this year, moving to e-learning in many cases, creating unique pressure for students, their families and universities across the country.

While it’s unclear when schools will welcome back students, campuses need to be prepared for a new normal. Schools will need to prove that they can offer a safe campus experience, and contactless is the way to go, whether we’re talking about smart cards (proximity cards) or other authentication solutions, such as mobile credentials.

Touchless solutions can help reduce contact transmission by decreasing the number of surfaces people touch in a facility, which thereby helps decrease opportunities for exposure.

A common way to accomplish touchless operation is by pairing low-energy automatic operators with actuators or readers. Presenting a contactless credential to the reader can automatically open a door without an individual having to touch anything. A similar operation is performed when a person is leaving the building.

  5. Access Control and Authentication Market Set to Reach $22.7 Billion by 2027, Report Suggests

The access control and authentication market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 11.2% from 2020 to 2027 to reach $22.7 billion by 2027, a new market research report from Meticulous Market Research has been able to suggest.

The new market research report titled, “Access Control and Authentication Market by Technology (Biometrics, Smart Card, Electronic Locks), Component, Application (Residential/Commercial, IT Telecom, BFSI, Retail, Defense, Healthcare, Manufacturing, Hospitality) – Global Forecast to 2027” points out that a series of factors such as increasing government focus towards improving public infrastructure with the incorporation of latest technologies; growing demand for high-level security technologies, largely amongst BFSI consumers; increasing need for an effective security system; and consistent technological developments are driving the growth of the access control and authentication (ACA) market.

Moreover, the increasing strategic partnerships among advanced technology providers and access control devices manufacturers to strengthen the product portfolio and their position in the global market is encouraging the growth of the access control and authentication market in the forecast period. However, the high initial cost of deploying biometric access control system may restrict the growth of this market in the coming years to some extent.

The report also takes into account the fact that, in 2020, the world is facing a very difficult and unpredicted situation, as the coronavirus continues to spread. The COVID-19 has started showing its distressing collision on most of the profitable businesses across the globe. The outbreak is posing serious challenges to various industries and the world economy.

The biometric access control devices are now playing a significant role in the safety and security of the people. The novel coronavirus is pouring the need for contactless biometric access control devices as the consumers don’t want to interact with shared contact-based authentication devices. The positive impact will be perceptible which in turn encourage the growth of the access control and authentication market over the forecast period.

  6. Access Control Systems Should be a Critical Component in Any Organizations’ Personnel Security Policy

Remote working and the furloughing of staff caused by the COVID-19 pandemic are leaving employees without the usual support mechanisms from their workplace, hence increasing the numerous security threats organisations and businesses face every day.

These threats are likely to grow, the more extended the pandemic control measures, and one of the most insidious and perhaps challenging to mitigate is an attack from within carried out by an organisation’s people or former people; employees, contractors, consultants, even volunteers. To address this inherent weakness in security requires a clear understanding of the threat and investment in robust mitigation policies, procedures and systems.

Putting in place a robust personnel security policy is therefore a must for every organization that takes security seriously, and access control is a vital component used for enforcing such a policy. In fact, where applicable, it is highly recommended to implement an access control system or procedure to limit/permit access to physical (buildings) and electronic assets.

Furthermore, the electronic access control system should be able to easily control who, what, when and where moves around a facility and use assets to provide real-time monitoring and alerts to breaches. Video surveillance can supplement this to provide an additional security layer.

  8. The Benefits of Integrated Access Control and CCTV Surveillance Systems

Deploying an integrated access control and CCTV surveillance system can significantly improve an organization’s security provision, but can actually deliver real business benefits on a broader scale, experts in this field believe.

Typically, access control is a part of a building or office manager’s responsibility, but the process is often simple and has little oversight. If a keycard is presented, a door will open, regardless of who is using the keycard or whether or not they are supposed to be at work on a given day.

As business functions digitalise, however, better ways of securing the workplace via access control emerge. IP-networked video cameras provide extensive real-time information that can be put to use beyond the traditional applications of surveillance.

In the case of access control, data from the video surveillance network is combined with data from access control – and other sources – into a single platform for a truly smart, efficient and secure system.

  9. Integrated Access Control and Identity Management Systems Can Help Limit the Spread of COVID-19

Integrated access control and identity management systems, whose purpose is to sync the identity management of employees and their physical access privileges, can be put to very good work and help limit the spread of COVID-19, experts in this sector have argued.

By using an integrated system, HR and security departments can manage employee access rights from anywhere, even across multiple offices with a single credential, while also tracking activity for personnel remotely.

Should an employee or visitor be later diagnosed with COVID-19, businesses can run audits of access history to determine when the infected individual entered a location and who was there concurrently, invaluable insight to help limit the disease’s spread.

A related circumstance that will make the integration of cloud-based access control and identity management even more important for HR professionals is an anticipated increase in staff reductions. Economic uncertainty is forcing businesses to consider downsizing and when these plans are executed, HR leaders benefit from immediate (and remote) revocation of access rights as impacted individuals are removed from an HR system. This automated security step, helps mitigate potential workplace violence issues from disgruntled employees.

  10. Access Control for Small Spaces – A Soaring Trend in Physical Security

A traditional lock and key to control access to the entrance and exit of a facility simply isn’t enough anymore in today’s highly-digitized world, and more flexible solutions for staffing arrangements of shift workers or contractors, shared workspaces and lean budgets have to be found and deployed.

More than ever, unmanned infrastructure is being tasked with protecting assets and network access points from physical and cyberattacks. Integrated electronic access control solutions are adapting to meet all of these changing needs.

Access to small interior spaces demands creative new solutions that are cost-effective and easy to use. In many facilities, cabinet locks are used to secure materials that multiple shifts of employees must access. This makes mechanical keys cumbersome for facilities to manage—more so when managing mechanical locks and keys for multiple sites.

Package delivery and data security aren’t going away any time soon, and the need to secure supplies and equipment in shared facilities will continue to grow.

That’s why facilities in a range of industries should explore the latest access control options for small spaces, which can improve efficiency, reduce costs and improve convenience for the people who use them.
